Marrakesh, 21 March 2016 - At its 55th meeting in Marrakesh, the Board of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) submitted a plan to the US government that should lead to the transition of the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) contract away from the government to a global so-called “multi-stakeholder community.” The transition is the final step in the long-anticipated privatisation of the Internet’s domain name system. If approved, the plan’s implementation should be completed before September 2016, paving the way for ICANN to manage the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) - a set of registries for domain names, IP addresses and protocol parameters. 200% increase in takedowns.
